Big Data Solution Helps Ufone Measure Performance of Business Units
Ufone is a cellular service provider in Pakistan with a subscriber base of over 24 million and a network that covers 10,000 locations in the country. Operations of Ufone are expanding rapidly, with the addition of fastest growing 3G network coverage the service provider is set to drive business through a more focused approach. It is against this backdrop that Ufone partnered with LMKT Pvt. Ltd. to implement the Honeycomb project, the first of its kind in the telecom sector.

Powered by LMKT’s V-Hive, Honeycomb takes a revolutionary, cluster-based business assessment approach to measure the performance of various business units. As a big-data solution, the Honeycomb processes terabytes of data on a daily basis to provide the Ufone leadership insight into the performance of various business units.

Challenge

Ufone had a distributed mechanism to map Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of its various business units. This meant that all strategic, tactical and operational decisions were made after relevant data from different sources was gathered and combined. Since Ufone also offers international roaming across 122 countries, the process of gathering and integrating data was cumbersome and time-consuming. The large volume of dataset had to be dealt with on daily basis, which is 4-6 terabytes daily. This volume of data falls under the category of big data. Hence, for Ufone, having a centralized platform that gathered integrated insights at a granular level, preferably using GIS technology, became a necessity.

Solution

Using a cluster model, the business units were divided into regions, provinces, districts. This resulted in Ufone’s operations being divided into 128 districts. Under the Honeycomb project, geographically enabled insights of ground realities were obtained at the targeted business units.

Honeycomb displays the performance of geographically dispersed business units geospatially on a map through the analysis of different KPIs. Moreover, any change in data is reflected by site variance, and it is calculated by comparison with last three respective values. It also provides a common platform for integrating essential information across regions and departments. A geo tactical solution, consisting of a web application on top of ESRI ArcGIS Server and desktop, which allows the higher management visibility of revenue concentration through a single dashboard. To handle the big data, LMKT provides data mining services and maps the data on GIS.

Honeycomb has also enabled Ufone’s higher management visibility of revenue concentration through a single dashboard. Additionally, the management is now able to monitor network performance, traffic routing and subscriber-based movement. The software also enables performance benchmarking in terms of technical, commercial and financial KPIs, along with product concentration and selling. It has the capability to overlay sales and services channel hierarchies, and map competition along with the related national demographics.
